Traditional games, costume contest, the burning of the rooster, and preacher Leti da Taberna bring the celebration to a close.
The marquee at Riomaior is hosting a packed day of events to bring the Entroido of Cobres to a close. The day began with a vermouth session and continues at 4:30 p.m. with traditional games such as the rooster in the river or the rooster on the pole, where participants must test their skill to avoid falling into the Maior River. This playful segment will end with the Corrida do Galo (Rooster Race), starring a synthetic animal that will be burned at the end of the day. Winners in each category will receive a prize of €100.
The event will be hosted by ISI, a well-known presenter from Galician TV (TVG), who will encourage participation in these time-honoured games. Historically, madamas were responsible for the rooster sacrifice, reflecting the deep-rooted role of women in this traditional celebration.
The jury will evaluate the costumes and award prizes in the children’s, individual, and group categories, with monetary prizes of €50 and €100. The awards will be presented alongside the winners of the Children’s Will Contest, the raffle of gift sets donated by Aceites Abril, and the different games.
There will also be dancing. Madamas and galáns will perform three times throughout the afternoon, while the group of Veterans will appear twice to showcase their Sword Dance, setting the stage for the symbolic burning of the rooster and the reading of its testament by Leti da Taberna. With her signature Galician wit, Leti continues to grow her social media following. In her role as preacher, she will humorously comment on local events — such as the abundance of roundabouts left by the A-57 megaproject — and even suggest that the mayor inaugurate the future open-air auditorium in Figueirido with a performance of hers, along with references to regional and national news.
The afternoon will end with a heartfelt surprise prepared by the Asociación Cultural Cobres and the entire Entroido de Cobres community.
This morning, the parade across the parishes concluded with visits to Sobreira, A Cardiña, and Paradellas.
